WEED WRANGLEl March 7th; 10AM-12:30PM
Join Friends of Mill Ridge Park to remove invasive species at the park as a part of the national Weed Wrangle® event. This is accomplished via hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines, and flowering plants.
Supervised by volunteer leaders in invasive weed management, participants can expect to learn about effective removal techniques and replanting with native species alternatives while having fun.
Weed Wrangle®, is a one-day, citywide, volunteer effort to help rescue our public parks and green spaces from invasive species through hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines and flowering plants.
STORY STROLLl March 14th; 11:30AM-2:30PM
Help us host our first Story Stroll, an interactive event where children enjoy a story—read in both English and Spanish—while moving through hands-on activity stations. Volunteers may read the book or assist with activities like planting seeds, crafts, chalk art, a scavenger hunt, or cupcake decorating. Training and support will be provided onsite by our staff. Please check in under the pavilion. Spanish-speaking volunteers are encouraged to sign up, but all are welcome!
HELPING HAND HIKEl March 12th, 18th, 20th, 31st; 10AM-12PM AND March 22nd; 1-3PM
Help us expand and improve the trail system at Mill Ridge Park! Get an exclusive look at the still-in-progress primitive Red Trail. Volunteers will cover up to 2 mile–no prior trail work experience needed. Snacks and water are provided. Expect a fun day that will involve hiking, bending, lifting, and the use of hand tools, and include:
Planning, measuring, mapping, and marking primitive trails.
Picking up and removing litter and debris from the trails.
Trimming branches.
Moving downed trees and branches from trail to maintain proper corridor and prevent shortcutting.
